Parental Rights After Miscarriage (as of October 2023): In Minnesota, parents have the right to the release and burial of their child and will be notified of their disposition options. (Please note: A death certificate is mandatory if a stillbirth occurs after 20 weeks of gestation.)

It can be difficult to know how to care for and support a friend, loved one, or even yourself through grieving a miscarriage or loss. Thankfully, there are a lot of support resources available in the Twin Cities, and below are a few that we found.

Minnesota Department of Health

The loss of a baby can be devastating. The good news is that help is available to Minnesota families who have experienced a stillbirth (pregnancy loss) or an infant death. In 2019, MDH contracted with Star Legacy Foundation to connect families who have experienced an infant death or a stillbirth to grief and loss support services. Missing Grace Foundation

Missing GRACE Foundation’s mission is to provide support, resources and education for families and professional care providers when there is loss of a baby, infertility, or adoption challenges. We offer hope and healing opportunities to G.R.A.C.E. – Grieve, Restore, Arise, Commemorate and Educate.

Hospice of the Red River Valley

Hospice of the Red River Valley offers a free ongoing grief support group for anyone who has experienced the death of a baby through pregnancy loss, stillbirth or in the first year of life. This group is free and open to the public, offered in our Fargo and Detroit Lakes offices.

Children’s Minnesota

The death of a child is both heart-breaking and life-changing. Children’s Minnesota offers programs intended to give comfort and support to families during the first year and beyond. We also collaboratively work with Allina Health to serve parents and families grieving a perinatal/infant loss.  Grief education programs offer families and children the opportunity to learn, explore and gain some understanding about a variety grief topics.  Grief related events offer families the chance to participate in a gathering where their child and other children will be remembered.
